Project time tracking

Log time directly against project tasks

Time is only useful when it says what it was for. In Clock Clerk every hour is logged against a task on a project, the same task that is a card on the project's board, so the hours, the estimate and the work are one record.

Thirty days of the Team plan, no card.

The problem

Hours logged against "Development" tell nobody anything

When the time tracker and the project plan are separate tools, people log against broad categories because finding the right task is work. The project manager then cannot say which task ran over, and a client who asks what the hours were spent on gets a guess.

The opposite failure is just as common: a tool that demands a timer running all day, which people forget, then reconstruct on Friday from memory anyway.

How Clock Clerk handles it

The task on the sheet is the card on the board

A week sheet, and a day view for logging as you go.

One row per project and task, seven days across, a total at the end. Type a number and it is saved. The day view steps a task up a quarter-hour at a time, or adds an hour in one click; a whole week typed at once takes about two minutes.

  • Only your projects. People book the projects they are members of, and a manager's grant does not add any.
  • A comment, an activity and a billing role on each line, opened from the cell.
  • Move a line to the right project or task with its days, comments and rate, and across the later weeks too.

Every plan, Free included

A person's week sheet: hours typed per project line and day, with a divider where the month ends, the old month approved and the new one still a draft.

The card shows the hours logged against it.

Each task is a card on the project's board. When it has an estimate, the card and the week sheet both show a bar of the hours logged against it by everyone, so an overrun shows while there is still time to act on it.

  • A thread on every card, so the decision about the work sits beside the hours spent on it.
  • Import tasks from Jira, Azure DevOps, Trello or Notion, as cards ready to log against.
  • Reports by task, person, activity, project or client, exported as Excel or CSV.

A card opened from the board: its owner, the hours logged against its estimate, a description and the card's own discussion.

Limitations

What it does not do

Clock Clerk records hours against a day. If the requirement is one of these, it is the wrong tool or needs a companion.

  • No timer or stopwatch

Hours are typed or stepped up a quarter-hour at a time. There is no start and stop button and no idle detection.

  • No activity monitoring

No screenshots, keystroke counts, app tracking or GPS. People record what they worked on, and their reviewer approves it.

  • No clock-in and clock-out

Hours are a number per day and task, not a start and end time, so it is not a punch clock for shift work or overtime rules.

  • No mobile app

It is a web app. The week sheet folds into a stack on a phone's browser, but there is no app to install and no offline mode.

  • Imports are one-way

Tasks imported from a tracker are copied once; updates there do not follow, and hours are not sent back to it.

Questions

Asked while evaluating

Does it have a timer?

No. Hours are typed against a day, which is what a client is invoiced for and what a reviewer can sign off. Most people log each day as they go, in the day view, stepping a task up a quarter-hour or adding an hour in one click; a whole week typed at once takes under two minutes.

What if someone logs hours on the wrong project?

They move the line from its menu, and its days, comments and rate go with it; it can carry on across the weeks after it too. Once the month is filed the line is locked, and the reviewer reopens it first.

Can people log time on a finished task?

Yes. A task in a done column is marked Done on the sheet, but still accepts hours, because the last fixes often land after the card has moved.
